ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE
International students who meet all admission requirements except for the English proficiency requirement can be admitted to UT with conditional admission. This means that they first enroll in our English Language Institute (ELI), where they attend English classes designed to help them develop English proficiency while also preparing them for university.
Students will begin a degree program when they attain the required score on the institutional TOEFL—which is offered at no additional cost at the end of each ELI session—or when they complete the ELI’s highest level and request a letter of recommendation from ELI.
ELI offers a total of seven levels during eight-week sessions, five times per year. Sessions begin in January, March, June, August, and October. Length of study in ELI depends on a student's proficiency level upon entry as well as their capacity and commitment for learning. eli.utk.edu
